Doumo di Milano 3rd trial proof
When I was sailing near Borneo Island, the strong window blew with heavy rain for whole three days. I set off all snails down, and let automatic radder navigation. I stayed in the cabin, and prayed for spring storm passed by. Lily was so small and weak against huge waves like a mountain high, I couldn't eat anything due to heavy rolling and pitching, got heavy seasick. In the afternoon March 11th, I saw faint sunshine behind fast moving dark clouds, and then I navigated Lily towards to Streamer of Malacca. The sea water was flowing so first with against Lily, and large number of huge tankers and ships were passing by on the narrow channel, I had to take great care of her navigation.
For nearIy three months, I engraved the medium dark toon, and built up the spires with the Saints on top. During engraving on the copper plate, my eyes occasionally lost the ability and concentration finding out form and structure. My sensation also lapsed the relationship in between small details and whole structure, hope the trial proof came out clearly.
On April 10th, Yoshio Shirai pulled out 3rd trial proof, my passion gushed out through the rollers with moderately pressure. The proof looked fresh and fine, I satisfied with my isolated and blind work, it took for 73 days, total 401 hours. However, she hasn't gotten just half way reaching to Genova harbor yet. Lily started sail on extensive Indian Ocean, hope to blow a nice following wind for her running.
April 12th Takuji Kubo
ボルネオ島の近くを航海していた時、激しい雨と共に強風がまる三日吹き荒れた。私は全てのセールを降ろしラダーを自動操縦にしてキャビンで春の嵐が通り過ぎるのを祈った。山のように高い巨大な波が襲いかかりリリーは小さく弱々しかった。激しい縦揺れと横揺れでなにも食べることが出来ず強度の船酔いに見舞われた。3月11日の午後、速く動く黒い雲の彼方に微かな太陽を見た。私はリリーをマラッカ海峡に向けた。速い海流はリリーに向って流れ、巨大なタンカーや外船が狭い運河に沢山行き交っていて注意深く操船しなければならなかった。
この三ヶ月近くで私は中間の暗いトーンを描き聖人達を頂上に立たせ尖塔を築き上げた。銅版にエングレービングを施している折、私の眼は時折形態や構造を把握する能力と集中力を失なった。また細かいディーテールと全体との関係性を私の感性は喪失していた。次の試し刷りが鮮明に表れるのをただ願うばかりだ。
4月10日、白井四子男は三回目の試し刷りを刷り終えた。私の情熱が適度の圧力と共にほとばしり、その刷りは新鮮かつ鮮明で、孤独な実態の見えない仕事に私は満足した。制作に要したのは 73日、401 時間だった。しかしながらジェノバ港に到港するまでの道程のまだ半分に満たない。リリーは広大なインド洋を航海し始めた。ランニングに適した追い風が吹きますように。

I set up the sail of my sailing boat, Lily, and sailed out the harbor of Yokohama on November 28th, 2012. My final destination was the harbor of old Genova, to come up to Holy Doumo di Milano, Italy. Lily sailed across the East China Sea and then headed toward the South. The sea was unbelievably mild, so that I started tacking and jaiving from many angles. Lily was incredibly running so fast against the wind, made it hard to control the sails and the radder nights and days. Especially it was not easy to find the right direction in the dark. As you can imagine, making navigation error consumed my valuable time. That's why I desperately wanted to reach the harbor of Genova by the end of June, 2013. I had so many sleepless nights, well, you could say half-awaken nights.
My printer, Yoshio Shirai pulled out the 2nd trial proof on January 16th. It was excellent, the dark part is real jet black as I expected. I am happy about the result of a month work. I first built up basic foundation and construction of the architecture for a month, which was quite a high speed to do such a work. I worked for 28 days, and if you do the math, that equals to 195 hours.
I will be controlling my sailing boat more carefully towards the South China Sea. Bon voyage!

Doumo di Milano
I took a short journey to Milano from Florence in the summer of 2005. Why? Because I was desiring to go up to the roof of Doumo di Milano. When I reached the roof, I doubted my eyes as the sight was just incredible - it was like a heaven. Then, I started shooting the sight of roof from many angles, made me feel peaceful and burning out my heart by the mid summer sunlight. Once I developed the films, the memory has came out with passion. Therefore I naturally decided to make an engraving of the holy sight.
I really don't know how long it took me to complete the engraving, it may be 10 months or 1 year. Anyway, I am happy to engrave the intricate and brilliant Gothic architecture. It took 46 hours for tracing from the photograph, and 79 hours for drypoint the guidelines with metal needle on the copper plate. The fist trial proof was pulled out December 18th, 2012 at Shirai print workshop, Akasaka, Tokyo. I started engraving 19th December with dark part, it was just a departure of long long voyage. I am planing to pull out about 7 trial proofs, and try out to show each proof on my website, this is the first plan in the world. I hope many people access my website and watch out my work.
