銅版画45年の追想 ー 横浜根岸の競馬スタンド
1991年長男、玲が大きくなってきたのでそれまで家族と一緒に住んでいたマンションの外に仕事場を移すことにした。横浜の根岸線、JR山手駅から急な坂を登った丘の上にあるマンションの一部屋を購入して小さなアトリエに改装した。そのマンションは根岸森林公園の脇にあり、その後方の丘にはアメリカ海軍の家族用の住宅地があって、横浜の中心地なのに信じられないほど広大な空間が拡がっていた。私は神経質なエングレービングの仕事に疲れたら、運動不足を解消するため公園で 散歩をしたり、愛読書を持って行き、芝生で読書した後にうたた寝をして帰って来るのがいつもの習慣だった。そこは特殊な地形をしている公園で、周囲約2キロの平らな道が楕円形になって続いていてその中は窪地になってい た。英国の公園と同じ種類の芝が生えていて小さな池もあり、昔は短いゴルフコースがあったようだ。公園の背後には使われていない競馬場の観覧席スタンドが、一等、二等と連なって建っていた。ここは日本競馬の発祥の地で、なんと慶應3年、1867年にイギリス人達がホースレースを始めた由緒ある所だった。明治後期には天皇賞レースが始まり、明治天皇が皇居から馬車でお召しになられていたそうだ。二等スタンドは90年代初めに解体されたが、一等スタンドは三つの高いエレベーター塔を備えて、今も米軍キャンプの脇に建っている。スタンドの周りは金属製のパネルの高い塀で囲まれていて何人も入れなくしていたが、そうなると中に入ってみたくなるものだ。その頃友人のフォトグラファー、永田昭夫さんがよくアトリエに遊びに来ていたが、私は彼に私の計画を話し、内部を隈なく撮影しょうということになった。早速市役所の公園課と接渉して、撮影した写真を市に贈呈するという条件で入場許可がおりた。1994年11月 11日、私達は公園課の職員と同伴で一階のロビーに入った。薄暗い広大な部屋の床にはアメリカ駐留軍の備品がいたるところに散らばっていて、その荒涼感がたまらなく良かった。外壁側には設備室やトイレットが設けられていて、壁のペンキの剥がれ具合が戦後の時間の流れを象徴しているようだった。このスタンドは戦後すぐアメリカ軍に占領されて、印刷工場として使われていたのを後で知った。
In 1991, my eldest son, Rei was grown up, so I decided to move my working space to another location outside of the condominium where I lived with my family. I purchased a one room condominium on the hill climbing a steep slope from JR Yamate station on the Negishi Line, and renovated it into a small atelier/studio shop. The condominium is located next to the Negishi Equestrian Forest Park and on the hill behind it there is a residence area for the families of the US Navy, an unbelievable vast space expanded, and it is also near the center of Yokohama City. When I am tired of my nervous engraving work, I take a walk in the park to resolve the lack of exercise, take a favorite book read on the lawn and take a nap and then return home as a usual custom. There was a special topography park, about 2 kilometers of flat road where the race horses used to run, and it continues in an elliptical shape with a hollow inside. The turf and design are the same as English parks and there is a small pond, and it seems there used to be a short golf course in the past. Behind the park, there were the first class and the second class stand of the old horse race track which were no longer used. This is the birthplace of Nippon Horse Racing, it was a historical place where the British began horse racing in 1867. The Emperor Award House Race began in the late Meiji period, and Emperor Meiji came from the Imperial Palace in Tokyo by a horse-drawn carriage. The second stand was dismantled in the early 1990s, but the first stand is equipped with three high elevator towers and still stands just beside the US Navy housing camp. The periphery of the stand was surrounded by a high fence of metal panels, so that no one was allowed to enter it, but in this case, we would like to enter inside. At the time, a friend of mine, Akio Nagata who is a unique photographer often visited my atelier, I told him about my plan for us to get into the stand and shoot the whole interior as photographs. We visited the park section of the City Hall immediately, and we got an admission with set conditions that we have to present the photographs to the City Hall. On November 11,1994, Akio and I entered the lobby of the first floor
with the staff park section. The furniture of old US stationed troops
that had been there in the past were scattered everywhere on the floor
of a dimly lighted large room, and its desolation was unbearably cool!
Equipment rooms and toilets were installed on the outer wall side, and
it seemed that the degree of peeling off of the wall paint symbolized
the flow of time after the war. I later learned that this stand was
used as a printing factory occupied by the US Forces just after the
Second World War (WW II).

手摺が錆びて朽ち落ちそうな階段を登って行くと二、三階は小さな部屋が長く続いていて、それぞれの部屋には机と椅子が一体になったアメリカン スタイルの家具や折り畳まれたベッドなどがそのまま残されていてた。さらに階段を登り四階に行くとスタンドの観覧席の上に通路がありその先に豪華な装飾で飾られたロイヤル ルームがあった。中に入ってみると驚いた。なんと相模湾の海がはるか彼方まで一望出来るではないか！あのキラキラ輝くピースフルな海は今も忘れられない。素晴らしいロケーションにあった皇室専用の部屋は度々の台風で屋根が剥がれかけて危険になり、2000年代初めに取り壊されて今はもう無い。五階の塔の最上部はエレベーターの制御機の電気室になっていて、珍しい丸窓の脇には使われなくなった電気配電盤が物珍しい訪問者を見つめるようにもの悲しげに残っていた。このスタンドに鳥が入って部屋を寝床にするらしく、糞害を防止するために2000年の中頃に全ての窓を醜いパネル板で塞いでしまって、今は内部に入れても室内の撮影は不可能だ。1994年に昭夫さんと私が視た光景は幻影になってしまったが、私が生きている間に、このスタンドが修復されて部屋、部屋に光が差し込むことがあるだろうか。
We climb up the stairs using the old rusty handrails that had decayed over time, small rooms continued for a long area on the second and third floor, and each room has American furniture and a folded bet etc…, the desk and chair are united together and it was left as it was. When we climb to the stairs and went to the fourth floor, there was a passage on the stand seats and there was a Royal Room decorated with luxurious decoration ahead. I was surprised when I entered inside, I was shocked to see how far the eyes could see to the Sea of Sagami and even faraway! I still cannot forget the sparkling peaceful sea. The room dedicated to the Royal family which was in a wonderful location is dangerous because the roof is peeling off with our frequent typhoons and was demolished in early 2000s, it no longer exists. The uppermost part of the fifth-floor tower was the electric room of the elevator control machine and the electric distribution board which was no longer used beside a rare round shaped window that reminded me of a sadness it showed to this unusual visitor. Birds enter the room of this stand and floor, and it seems that they make themselves at home in the room, where they now live and sleep as we do upon our beds. In all it was stinking, all the windows were blocked with ugly panel boards in middle of 2000s, now it would be impossible to shoot the indoor, we were lucky to have gotten the chance prior to this period. The sight that Akio and I saw in 1994 become an Illusion, but as long as I live, this stand restored in my mind, and I wish it could once again be restored to its original beauty and that the light be restored to the interior of this great attraction. I wonder if this can be so, and if the light will enter these rooms once again?

このユニークな外観を持ったスタンドは横浜にゆかりがあるアメリカ人建築家、J. H. モーガンによって設計され、1928年ホテル ニュー グランドと同時期に建造されている。山手の丘にはモーガンが設計した個人住宅が数棟残っているが、山手111番館やベーリック ホールは典型的なスパニッシュ コロニアルスタイルを基調に設計されていて私の好きな洋館だ。もっとモーガンのことを詳しく知りたくなり横浜開港資料館の図書室へ行ったら、なんとモーガン設計の建築の青写真をまとめている資料本が2冊あった。目的を言って許可をもらい数枚コピーした。スタンドの構造と形状が良く分かる側面図を私のデザインにアレンジして作品を制作した。明治時代には横浜では地図や店舗広告図などもエングレーヴィングで制作して印刷していたのだが、建築設計図をエングレーヴィングにするアーティストは現代では私くらいだろう。山手の横浜外国人墓地で眠っているモーガンさんが喜んでくださると嬉しいのだが、、、
The stand with its unique appearance was designed by J. H. Morgan, an American architect who is familiar with Yokohama, and was built at the same time as the Hotel New Grand in 1928. There are several private residences designed by Morgan on the hills in Yamate, but Yamare No. 111 and the Berrick Hall are designed with typical Spanish colonial style and my favorite Western - style buildings too. I wanted to know more about Morgan, so I visited the library of Yokohama Archives of History, and I found two data books summarizing the blueprint of the Morgan design architectures. I asked for and got permission to copy several architectural drawings by Morgan. In Yokohama, they used to produce and print the maps and shop advertisements with engraving methods during the Meiji period, but in the present, I may be the only artist to engrave architectural drawings at this time. I am happy that Mr. Morgan, who is sleeping in a Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery, will get to see a person who desires to show his great works to others and that he will be delighted about my works to portray his building and works within my own works.
